KAWS

Biography

KAWS was born in New Jersey in 1974, and he received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. He began as a graffiti artist in the early 1990s, and gained recognition for his interventions on billboards and advertising posters. Today, he holds a unique position where art, media, and commerce intersect.

Like Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol, KAWS crosses seamlessly into popular culture, largely because his work often riffs on familiar characters, including Snoopy, the Smurfs, the Michelin Man, and SpongeBob SquarePants. He exhibits at some of the world’s best-known art galleries and museums, and collaborates with global brands to create consumer products.

When viewing his art, in fact, it becomes easy to believe that he once owned a store in Tokyo called OriginalFake, which sold toys, clothing, and objects designed by KAWS himself. His artwork reflects his distinctive overarching brand, but it’s also immediate and organic, and of superior graphic quality.

Having created an album cover for Kanye West and counting musician Pharrell Williams among his early supporters and collectors, KAWS has amassed rabid fans around the world who wait on line for days to see his newest work.
