Shingo Francis

Shingo Francis is a painter, drawer and photographer who employs a minimal and abstract approach to his work to explore color, time and expanse. Francis was born in Santa Monica, California in 1969. At the age of three he moved to Japan with his Japanese mother, and went to an international school in Tokyo until the age of thirteen. He subsequently moved back to California to live with his father during the academic year, spending the summer and winter breaks in Tokyo. Francis received degree Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992 from Pitzer College in Claremont, California. In 2001, he moved his studio from Los Angeles to Japan where he contemplated and immersed himself in its traditional and popular culture. Francis currently works in Tokyo, Japan and Brooklyn, NY.

He was awarded the Fumio Nanjo Award (director of Mori Museum, Tokyo) in 2003. Residencies include Montalvo Arts Center, CA, and LMCC, Governors Island Swing Space in 2010, MARMA in Berlin in 2012, and Yokohama Collage of Art and Design, Kogane studio in 2014.
