Carlos Cruz-Diez's Physichromie 250 (1966) falls early in the Physichromie series, begun in 1959, and dates to the same years in which Cruz-Diez first won critical and commercial recognition in Paris. Cruz-Diez was one of three founding figures, alongside Jesús Rafael Soto and Alejandro Otero, of the Venezuelan Kinetic Art movement, and works numbered, like this one, from No. 1 through roughly the 400s were typically executed in acrylic and plastic elements on wood, before Cruz-Diez's later move to aluminum supports in the 1970s.
“When colour is put on an object, it's dead. When it's projected in space, it's alive, it's rich, it varies, it vibrates. ”— Carlos Cruz-Diez
