DONALD SULTAN (b. 1951)

DONALD SULTAN Donald Sultan is an American artist known for his use of industrial materials to create large-scale paintings of everyday objects such as flowers, dominoes, and horses. Sultan’s imagery is framed with tar-black backgrounds in few colors and geometric shapes, revealing a minimalist and abstracted aesthetic. His paintings are distinctively textured and balance the contrast of positive and negative space. Sultan was a member of the New Image movement along with fellow painters Susan Rothenberg and Julian Schnabel. He has shown in galleries all over the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
