Louise Bourgeois's Crochet III (1998) comes from a set of five prints made with Mixografía in Los Angeles, when the artist, then in her late eighties, was deeply engaged with thread and textiles. That interest traced back to her childhood in the family's tapestry restoration business, where her mother repaired old weavings by hand. Sewing became, for Bourgeois, a lasting metaphor for mending and memory.
The composition is an inverted triangle. Long horizontal bars cross the top of the sheet, and beneath them rows of hanging loops narrow step by step to a single strand at the bottom, like a tapering length of lace or a net lifted from one edge. Mixografía casts these lines from a sculpted metal plate pressed into handmade paper pulp under high pressure, so the red cord stands up from the paper — the shadows along each loop make it read as knotted thread.
In the years that followed, Bourgeois cut up her own clothing and household linens to make fabric sculptures and books, turning personal textiles into art. Crochet III shares that hands-on quality while keeping the clean graphic punch of red on white. It is a strong image from a key late chapter, and Mixografía can issue a certificate of authenticity on request.
