Patience Y unframed

Charles White’s Patience Y (1971) is a striking, large-scale work on paper that exemplifies the artist’s profound command of the human figure and his enduring commitment to dignity as a central theme. Executed in charcoal, paint, and wax crayon, the composition presents a monumental female figure with outstretched arms, her body rendered with a sculptural sensitivity that conveys both physical weight and emotional depth. Emerging from a dense, atmospheric ground, the figure appears both grounded and transcendent—at once vulnerable and resolute—embodying the quiet strength that defines much of White’s work.

White’s labor-intensive technique is essential to the power of the image. Layers of charcoal are built up and softened to create a rich range of tonal values, while passages of wash and crayon introduce subtle variations in surface and texture. The result is a figure that feels fully realized yet enveloped by a shifting, almost spiritual field. As White described his subjects, these are “images of dignity,” rooted in lived experience and shaped by his belief that art could serve as a vehicle for social awareness and change.

This work comes from the distinguished collection of Russell Goings, an early and dedicated supporter of White and Romare Bearden, whose collection reflects a deep commitment to African American art. The continued relevance of White’s practice was reaffirmed by the landmark 2018 retrospective organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and traveling to The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—the first major survey of the artist’s work since his death in 1979—solidifying his legacy as one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century.
