These editions make collecting more accessible and, for many artists, were a way for everyday people to have and live with art. For other artists, they were a specific vehicle with which to express their vision.
Printmaking has even been the focus of major exhibitions such as The British Museum’s upcoming “French Impressions: Prints from Manet to Cézanne” or the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “The Power of Prints”. As these shows demonstrated, artists utilized printmaking to explore technique and image making while also affording people the opportunity to collect works from the artists.
Prints have had an enormous influence on the social, cultural, and visual landscape for centuries and this display is a small snapshot into that history, focusing mainly on modern artists.
