Parables of Memory and Dream

Micaela Amateau Amato "Dona Nasi"

Parables of Memory and Dream brings together ten intensely colored, life-size cast glass portrait heads and small figures that merge personal heroes and heroines with ancestral portraiture. The artist, Micaela Amateau Amato, is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Art and Women's Studies at Penn State University. In dialogue and reconciliation, these hybrid works evoke encounters across geography and era, a meeting of multiple tribes, histories, and selves.

The cast glass sculptures are part of a larger, ongoing body of mixed media work encompassing painting, photography, large-scale sculpture, neon text, ceramic, and bronze. Weaving self-portraiture with ancestry rooted in Iberia, Morocco, Turkey, and Rhodes, Amateau Amato's practice engages deeply with diasporic histories.
