טבע דומם כמו תפוזים ולימונים (455 בקירוב) מעניק לנו תובנה על חייו העשירים והצבעוניים של צ'רצ'יל, בדיוק כמו נופיו ונופי הים שלו. צ'רצ'יל צייר תפוזים ולימונים בלה פאוזה. צ'רצ'יל נהג לפקוד לעתים קרובות את לה פאוזה כאורחם של סוכנו הספרותי, אמרי רבס ואשתו, וונדי.  ריבס רכש את הבית מקוקו שאנל.  בעוד שבני משפחת צ'רצ'יל האחרים לא היו שותפים להתלהבותו, צ'רצ'יל ובתו שרה אהבו את המקום, שצ'רצ'יל כינה בחיבה "לה-פאוסלנד".  כדי להימנע מציור בחוץ בבוקר ינואר קריר, וונדי ריבס סידרה לצ'רצ'יל את הפירות לצייר. מוקף באוסף המעולה של יצירות אימפרסיוניסטיות ופוסט-אימפרסיוניסטיות של משפחת רבס, כולל מספר ציורים של פול סזאן, תפוזים ולימונים מאיר את מערכות היחסים של צ'רצ'יל ואת השפעתו של סזאן, שאותו העריץ. הציור, כמו צ'רצ'יל, חי חיים צבעוניים, והוצג הן בתערוכת ציוריו באקדמיה המלכותית לאמנות ב-1959 והן ביריד העולמי בניו יורק ב-1965.
