フランク・テニー・ジョンソンは、1904年に『フィールド・アンド・ストリーム』誌のイラストレーターとしてキャリアをスタートさせた。ジョンソンは1904年から1920年までニューヨークで暮らしたが、スタジオワークの素材を集めるためにアメリカ西部を旅した。





1912年、チャールズ・ラッセルとモンタナ州ブラックフット居留地を訪れたことは、ジョンソンにとって重要な出来事だった。一時的にカリフォルニアに戻った後、ワイオミング州コディの新しいアトリエで長年を過ごした。





この時期の作品は、ジョンソンに "アメリカ月光画の巨匠"、"オールド・ウェストの巨匠 "という称号を与えた。スカウト "という絵には、のどかな原住民の風景が描かれている。ジョンソンは、原住民との直接の研究や経験が、彼の作品に繰り返し登場するテーマだった。
