Milton Avery's The Print Dress (Woman with Mandolin) (c. 1935) belongs to a pivotal year: in 1935 Avery had his first solo exhibition, at New York's Valentine Gallery, alongside Matisse, Picasso, Miro, and Braque. The show brought serious critical attention and pushed him toward the simplified forms, flattened space, and confident color that define his mature style, already visible here.

A woman in a pink dress patterned with short dark brushstrokes sits before a dark green ground, her head tilted down, eyes lowered, her body curled inward around a mandolin in her lap. Painted in oil on canvas, her face is pale and masklike, built from broad planes with almost no shading, a flattening that trades detail for mood. The mandolin never quite reads as an instrument being played; it feels more like a companion, holding music that stays silent.

The National Gallery of Art credits Avery with an achievement rare among his peers: sustaining representation while steadily simplifying form and color, even as the Depression pushed many American painters toward realism. The Vero Beach Museum of Art has called him the "American Matisse", and his quiet resistance to prevailing taste later shaped Mark Rothko and the Color Field painters. In The Print Dress, that resolve is already fully formed.
