Irving Norman: Close Up

Detail from "American Street Scene" (1961).

Irving Norman returned inexorably changed from voluntary service as a machine gunner in the Spanish Civil War. “I want all my efforts displayed,” he said, “so that hopefully they would have a humanizing effect on people that see it.”

A barber working in isolation from a tiny studio on Tunitas Creek, Norman built vast canvases that would hold “a neurotic mirror to a disordered world.” He remained an optimist despite commercial failure and FBI blacklisting, convinced these images might open America’s eyes.

The works are overwhelming. Every figure, every gesture carries meaning. Close Up invites you to lean in and let Norman reveal your humanity.
