Jacob Hashimoto

Jacob Hashimoto (b. 1973, Greeley, Colorado) is an American artist who builds intricate sculptural and installation works from hundreds of small, handmade components — bamboo-and-paper kites, model boats, and enameled foam blocks among them. Suspended from ceilings or mounted on walls, his layered, accretive compositions read as dense, fragmented tapestries that shift with the viewer's position in the room.

Hashimoto studied at Carleton College before earning his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Though drawing on his Japanese heritage through materials and craft traditions, his connection to that culture comes primarily through his Japanese-American father, filtered through a distinctly American, digitally inflected sensibility — his abstract forms often evoke landscape, cosmology, and the pixelated logic of video games as much as they do traditional handicraft. Since his first solo exhibitions in the mid-1990s, Hashimoto has shown internationally in New York, Los Angeles, London, Brussels, Venice, and Milan, with work held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Art in Embassies at the U.S. Department of State, and the Fondation Carmignac in France, among others. He lives and works in Ossining, New York.
