Mixografía Print Shop and Gallery

Louise Bourgeois's Crochet IV (1998) is one of five prints made with the Mixografía workshop in Los Angeles, a series that captures the artist's late-career attention to thread, knots, and needlework. Bourgeois spent her youth in her family's tapestry restoration workshop outside Paris, where her mother mended damaged weavings; sewing as repair stayed with her for life.
Two rosettes sit side by side at the center of the sheet, each built from long red loops that fan out like petals around a knotted core. Where the two forms meet, their loops overlap and tangle, as if the pair were joined by a single thread. The effect recalls lace doilies. Mixografía achieves this by casting a three-dimensional metal plate and pressing it into handmade paper pulp under high pressure, so every loop is raised and rounded on the sheet — closer to actual cord than to ink.
Pairs and couples recur throughout Bourgeois's work, often standing in for the ties between people. Crochet IV gives that theme a light, decorative touch — two forms held together by a shared line. It is an appealing and distinctly physical work by one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Mixografía can issue a certificate of authenticity on request.
