Frank Tenney Johnson comenzó su carrera como ilustrador para Field and Stream Magazine en 1904. Johnson vivió en Nueva York desde 1904 hasta 1920; sin embargo, viajó al gran Oeste americano para reunir material de partida para su trabajo de estudio.
