ALFRED THOMPSON BRICHER (1837–1908)
Alfred Thompson Bricher was an American painter associated with the Hudson River School and the later Luminist movement. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Bricher was largely self-taught and became known for his serene, light-filled coastal and marine landscapes. His meticulous attention to atmosphere, reflection, and the effects of sunlight on water exemplified the Luminist concern with tranquility and clarity. Working primarily in oil and watercolor, Bricher captured scenes of New England’s rocky shores and calm harbors with a refined sense of harmony and detail. His work has been recognized for its technical mastery and poetic vision of the American seacoast.
