Frank Tenney Johnson begann seine Karriere als Illustrator für das Field and Stream Magazine im Jahr 1904. Johnson lebte von 1904 bis 1920 in New York City, reiste aber immer wieder in den großen amerikanischen Westen, um Material für seine Studioarbeit zu sammeln.
