ショールズ島はチャイルド・ハッサムの芸術家人生において最も個人的かつ持続的に描かれた主題の一つであり、20年間にわたり画家自身のコレクションに収められていた。ハッサムがショールズ諸島を初めて訪れたのは1884年で、1915年まで定期的に訪れ続けた。メイン湾沖に浮かぶこの小さな島々の荒々しい美しさは、彼の一生を通じて中心的なインスピレーションの源となった。 移ろいゆく光、散りばめられた野花、水晶のように澄んだ水は絶え間ない視覚的詩情を提供し、島々は彼の最も輝かしく称賛された風景画や海岸風景の数々の舞台となった。
