JESUS RAFAEL SOTO (1923-2005)

JESUS RAFAEL SOTO Jesus Rafael Soto was a Venezuelan Kinetic and Op artist. He studied under the same teacher as Carlos Cruz-Diez and several other artists who joined the movement later on. Soto did not feel restricted by any particular medium, and in fact innovated the use of plexiglass, plastic, and rubber to create many of his works. He often used geometric shapes and a carefully chosen color palette to highlight the illusory nature of his compositions. Many of his works were on a large scale as well, such as his Penetrables series, which were life-size installations of metal and plastic that the viewer was required to walk through in order to fully view all aspects of the piece. Soto, along with his fellow Kinetic and Op artists, were trying to make art a universal experience, which was something they felt was missing from art in Latin America.
