Heather James proudly presents our second partnership with the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden. Paying homage to the Historic Artists Studios and Homes (HAHS) organization, the exhibition features artists who are all part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation program. HAHS is an association of 61 museums preserving former homes and studios of world-renowned American artists. Launched in 1999, HAHS began with 20 locations and includes nearly 50 important sites today. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens became a part of HAHS in 2019. HAHS continues to thrive, protect, and interpret this important part of American culture and history.

Sites of intense creativity, these spaces offer insight into the personal lives and processes of the artists while also giving us a glimpse into the lives of Americans from previous generations. HAHS provides an opportunity to understand works in the context of the artists’ lives and their art-making process. These studio spaces could bring the solitude artists needed, but no artist ever works in a vacuum.

The exhibition, Discovering Creativity brings together over two dozen works by 14 artists, putting these artists into conversation and dialogue with each other. The show includes a unique selection of works by Ann Norton, highlighting the vital connection between the creative process, space, and outcome in situ of Norton’s home and studio.

Discovering Creativity features artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Andrew and N.C. Wyeth, Thomas Hart Benton, and Grant Wood. Covering different movements, the exhibition includes the abstraction of George L.K. Morris and Elaine de Kooning, the Regionalism of Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, and even the Minimalism of Donald Judd. Showcasing a variety of subjects, from Winslow Homer’s landscapes to Joseph Sharp’s portraits to Chaim Gross’s sculptures, Discovering Creativity explores the creative process across mediums. These cross-temporal and cross-geographical conversations enlighten the development of art history across the American landscape and the dialogues that can occur despite differences in location and periods.

Through this unique collaboration with Ann Norton Sculpture Garden and HAHS, we’re bringing some of the very best artists from American history to the doorstep of our cherished Florida arts community.”
