La mort prématurée de Modigliani en 1920, à l'âge de 35 ans, des suites d'une tuberculose, a privé le monde de l'un des pères de l'art moderne. Son œuvre était révolutionnaire ; le fait de vivre et de travailler à Paris pendant le premier quart du XXe siècle a placé le jeune artiste au cœur de l'évolution la plus importante de la peinture depuis l'impressionnisme, plusieurs décennies auparavant.


Sa courte et brillante carrière, remplie de ses nus emblématiques, ne peut être appréciée à sa juste valeur sans tenir compte de l'important corpus d'œuvres sur papier. Le terme "cariatide" fait référence aux sculptures architecturales grecques, les cariatides. Ces colonnes sculptées de figures féminines soutiennent l'entablement des temples. Modigliani a appelé ce sujet


"colonnes de tendresse". Ce dessin est un exemple précoce des lignes courbes et des formes en amande qui marquent la signature de Modigliani.
